The Mangalica Fesztival celebrates Hungary’s heritage curly hairy pig. For three days in February Liberty Square is packed with venders selling every kind of Mangalica sausage; grilled and roasted Mangalica head, shoulder, and tenderloin; Mangalica cracklin’; Mangalica ham; Mangalica lard; and cheeses, breads, candies, fruit preserves, grilled bread on a stick, and langos in the event that one tires of pig. It was a beautifully sunny day — a treat in itself! — and a wonderfully festive event.
These men were singing the saddest song we’ve every heard. It was obviously a well known song since men (only men as far as I could see) would join in for a verse as they walked by. Though we didn’t understand a word, it seemed like longing for better days.
